The best ways to export Facebook group posts and comments (compared)

There are five realistic ways to get posts and comments out of a Facebook group. They differ a lot in completeness, effort, cost and risk to your account. Here is an honest comparison to help you pick.

ステップごとの手順

  1. Decide what you need. Only your own posts? Facebook's Download Your Information is enough. The whole group with every comment? You need a tool that reads the group itself.
  2. Check access. Make sure you can see the group while logged in (public, or private and you are a member).
  3. Pick a method. For a complete export without code or sharing your password, use a browser extension like Group Exporter for Facebook. For a few posts, copy-paste is fine.
  4. Export to the right format. CSV for spreadsheets, HTML/PDF to read or share, JSON for backups, JSONL or Markdown for AI tools.

Facebook group export methods compared

The table sums up the five methods. The biggest differences are whether you get other members’ posts (Facebook’s own download doesn’t include them) and whether you have to hand your login or cookies to someone else.

What about the Facebook API?

There is no official API for reading groups any more. Meta announced the removal of the Groups API with Graph API v19.0 in January 2024, and it was turned off for every version 90 days later, permissions included. Any tool that still reads group posts does it through the Facebook website, like you do in your browser.

1. Facebook "Download your information"

Free and official: in Accounts Center, open “Your information and permissions”, then “Download your information”, and select your Facebook activity. Facebook prepares a ZIP in HTML or JSON and keeps it available for a few days.

It only contains content you posted yourself. Your own group posts and comments are in it, but other members’ posts and the replies under them are not. Fine for a personal backup, not for exporting a group.

2. Manual copy-paste

Works for a handful of posts. For anything bigger, comments hide behind "View more comments" and "View replies" links, formatting is lost, and a busy group takes days. Free, but your time is the cost.

3. Cloud scraping services

Platforms such as Apify or PhantomBuster run scrapers on their servers and send you the results. For public groups they can work without your account; for private groups they need your Facebook session cookie, which gives them the same access to your account as your logged-in browser.

They run from data-center IP addresses that Facebook flags quickly, keep a copy of your data on their servers, and are billed monthly or per result. Powerful for large public datasets; risky for private groups and personal accounts.

4. Python scripts and open-source scrapers

Free and flexible if you code: open-source libraries such as facebook-scraper on GitHub read Facebook’s mobile pages. They break whenever Facebook changes its website, often miss nested replies, and leave login, pacing and parsing to you. A good choice for developers who want to maintain their own pipeline.

5. Browser extensions (Group Exporter for Facebook)

Group Exporter for Facebook runs inside your own Chrome, with your normal Facebook session, so nothing is shared and nothing leaves your computer. It downloads every post, comment and reply with human-like pacing, can pause and resume, updates incrementally, and exports to CSV, HTML/PDF, JSON, JSONL and Markdown. Free for 200 posts; Pro is $24.90 once.

Its limit is the same as yours: it only sees groups you can open while logged in, and it reads at a human pace, so a group with tens of thousands of posts takes hours, not minutes.

Which format should you export to?

CSV for Excel or Google Sheets, when you want to sort, filter or count. HTML for an archive you can read offline or print to PDF, with photos. JSON for a complete backup or for code. JSONL or Markdown to give the discussions to ChatGPT, Claude, NotebookLM or a RAG knowledge base.

Which one should you choose?

Only your own content: Download your information. A few posts: copy-paste. A whole group with comments, without code, without sharing your password and without a subscription: Group Exporter for Facebook. Large-scale public data collection by developers: a cloud service or your own scripts.
