How to export a Microsoft Teams chat to Excel or CSV

Want your Teams messages in a spreadsheet to filter, count or keep a record? Teams has no export button, and copy-pasting loses the sender, the dates and the structure. Here is how to get one clean row per message into Excel or Google Sheets.

Step by step

  1. Install Chat Exporter for Teams. Add it to Chrome, Edge or Brave, open Teams on the web (teams.microsoft.com or teams.live.com) and sign in.
  2. Load my chats. Click the extension icon, then "Load my chats". It reads the conversations you can already see in your signed-in tab.
  3. Choose the chat and range. Pick a one-to-one, group, meeting or channel chat. With Pro you can set a date filter to export only the period you need; scroll up in Teams first for older messages.
  4. Export to CSV. Choose Excel/CSV. The file opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers with accents and emoji intact, one row per message.
Try it on a chat, free. The free version saves the latest 100 messages of each chat to Text and CSV. Pro is $27.90 once for the whole history, the evidence PDF and every format.

Why Teams has no spreadsheet export

Teams is built for chatting, not for getting your messages back out. There is no "export to Excel", and the admin eDiscovery tools that can export conversations need IT access and produce technical files, not a tidy spreadsheet. For your own chats, you are on your own.

Copy-pasting a conversation into Excel collapses everything into one cell or a jumble of lines: you lose who sent each message, the timestamps and the thread of replies. A long chat is impossible to clean up by hand.

What you get in the CSV

One row per message, with the sender, the date and time, the chat it belongs to, the message text, and whether it is a reply. Because every message is its own row, you can sort by date, filter by sender, count messages per person, or build a pivot table.

The headers stay in English so the file works in any language of Excel or Google Sheets. JSON is also available if you feed the chat to another tool.

Only your own chats, no admin

The extension reads the conversations you can already open, through the Teams tab you are signed in to. There is no admin export to request, no password to enter, and nothing is sent to us or anyone else: the spreadsheet is built in your browser and saved to your computer.

Work data may still be covered by your employer's policies, so check what you are allowed to keep before you export a work conversation.

Free version and limits

The free version exports the latest 100 messages of each chat to Text and CSV. Pro ($27.90 once) exports the whole cached history, adds the date filter, pictures, the evidence PDF and every format. It works with personal accounts on teams.live.com and work or school accounts on teams.microsoft.com.
